Tips for Farming in the Heat of Summer
Throughout the year, migrant farm workers toil the land and earn a living under the sun. The h2a work visa gives these individuals, and many more, a chance to work towards their dreams and provide for their loved ones in an honest way. Working so hard in the heat can be difficult, so let’s get into some tips that can be used to stay safe and cool in the summer sun.
Keep Yourself Hydrated
Your body loses a lot of water when you’re in the heat for a long period of time. Sweating and exerting energy can lead to dehydration, heat sickness, and other heat-related problems. To stay safe, keep yourself hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages that could exacerbate feelings of thirst or lead to further fluids being lost.
Keep Cool & Calm
When you want to stay cool, it’s recommended that you move into a shady area and rest for a while. However, the shade isn’t the only way you can stay cool while in the sun. Wear clothing that is breathable and loose, allowing air to flow through them easily. Choose bright colors, as these reflect light from the sun instead of absorbing it like dark colors. Wear hats and try to take breaks as often as possible.
Keep Yourself Protected
Sunburn is uncomfortable and can lead to damage to your skin cells. Protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is essential, so use sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. Apply it to the skin before going in the sun and reapply it often especially when sweating.
Using these tips, even the most hardworking gardener or farmer can stay safe and get work done in the blistering heat of the sun.
